Customize Your Avatar: 8 Popular 3D Character Modeling Tools

VIVERSE Team • Feb. 27, 2025

3-minute read

3D character modeling is the process of producing three-dimensional digital characters, typically for games, animations, and—for us virtual reality (VR) enthusiasts—customized avatars.

A broad range of software solutions designed for 3D character modeling are now available. While some offer free features and aim to democratize what was once a complex task with a steep learning curve, others target professional artists and computer graphics studios with state-of-the-art tools.

This article will introduce eight popular software tools for 3D character design—suitable for creators of all levels.

Blender

Free and open-source (supported by a dedicated community and having a vast library of plug-ins and tutorials), Blender is undoubtedly one of the most widely used solutions among both new and experienced artists. From modeling, rigging, animation, and compositing to rendering, video editing, collaboration, and more, Blender offers a complete 3D pipeline beyond just character modeling.

SketchUp

SketchUp's biggest pros, and the main reasons beginners flock to this software, are its simple and intuitive user interface and comprehensive "Warehouse" of user-made model templates. It offers a standard free version as well as advanced paid features. Though not directly related to 3D character modeling, it is the software of choice for many architectural projects.

ZBrush

If you have a background in sculpting or painting, ZBrush might just be for you. It features a range of sculpting tools that mimic real-life sculpting techniques, allowing artists to create intricate textures and refine model shapes. ZBrush is available through subscription or perpetual licensing.

3ds Max

3ds Max is an excellent option for those already experienced in 3D graphic design. Its toolbox includes modeling, rigging, texture, lighting, animation, and graphics rendering features. It supports many of the most widely adopted rendering engines and file formats, ensuring interoperability with other applications. 3ds Max is considered a professional-grade software platform with a steep price tag and learning curve.

Maxon Cinema 4D

Created for both 3D graphics professionals and hobbyists, Maxon Cinema 4D is highly regarded in the field of visual effects, especially for motion graphics. Despite offering an abundance of advanced features, the software's well-organized, intuitive user interface and an engaged community greatly simplify the learning process for beginners.

Although considered less flexible when it comes to fully customized modeling, Poser provides a vast library of 3D characters (humans, animals, robots, etc.), hairpieces, clothing, hand gestures, textures, and facial expressions, as well as user-friendly rigging and animating features. It's easy to use and one of the best solutions for creating 3D polymesh human characters.

MakeHuman

Open-source, free, and user-friendly, MakeHuman is made for those new to 3D character design. As the product name suggests, its straightforward tools and predefined characters are limited to creating humanoid 3D models. The user interface primarily consists of sliders and toggles that allow you to modify your model's appearance and see the alterations in real time. For more advanced modeling functions, you can integrate MakeHuman-based models into other software platforms like the mentioned Blender.

3D character modeling is essential for building your fully customized avatar, a unique digital persona for 3D virtual experiences like VIVERSE.

VIVERSE allows you to import 3D characters you've built from scratch as avatars. However, it also has its own avatar creator with a rich portfolio of templates if you prefer a more straightforward way to generate an avatar. Whether you want to have complete control over every detail of your avatar or build with ready-made models, step into the wondrous experience of VIVERSE today!
