Since its debut in 2014, "Five Nights at Freddy’s" (FNAF) has become a hallmark in the horror gaming world, especially in VR, leaving a lasting impression on many VR gamers. Known for its unique surveillance camera perspective, suffocating atmosphere, and deeply unsettling story, this series has successfully drawn players into the love-hate universe of Freddy's diner.
On October 27, 2023, the series' live-action film adaptation "Five Nights at Freddy’s" was released by Universal Pictures. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the movie was a hit with audiences, raking in $297.1 million and breaking Blumhouse Productions' box office record. A sequel, "Five Nights at Freddy’s 2," is set to release on December 5, 2025.
Riding this wave of excitement, the game team at Steel Wool Studios announced the release of the latest installment, "Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic," on June 13, 2025. This time, the protagonist isn't the familiar animatronic friends but a more formidable foe, the "Mimic," ready to scare players out of their wits.
The story is set in 1979, where players enter an abandoned doll workshop called "Murray’s Costume Manor" to explore the mysterious legacy left by reclusive inventor Edwin Murray. Hidden within this workshop is a dangerous experimental creation—the "Mimic." Its origins trace back to a short story, "The Mimic," from the "Tales from the Pizzaplex" novel. In the story, engineer Edwin Murray designed a robot to mimic human behavior to keep his son David company. However, over time, it began to exhibit violent tendencies, leading to a series of tragic events.
The "Mimic" not only exists in the novel but also became a main antagonist in the "Five Nights at Freddy’s: Security Breach" DLC "Ruin," further solidifying its place in the series. This robot is highly adaptable and can transform, acting as a prototype skeleton that can wear different costumes, disguise itself as various characters, and even become the embodiment of the player's deepest fears.
From the trailer and available information, the gameplay is similar to its predecessor, "Security Breach," allowing free exploration in a 3D environment. Players still need to use surveillance cameras, surrounding tools, and various mechanisms to protect themselves. However, the challenges are tougher this time, as the Mimic's abilities make enemies more unpredictable. Players must gather clues and solve hidden puzzles, with the ultimate goal of gaining control over the "Mimic." Additionally, the trailer reveals some new characters, like mechanical dolls of an elephant, a puppy, and a human girl, while the familiar Freddy is nowhere to be seen.
"Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic" is set to release on June 13, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic Games Store, and it’s confirmed to be available on PlayStation VR2. While VR support on other platforms hasn't been confirmed yet, given that previous titles like "Help Wanted" and its sequel supported VR on Steam, there's a high chance VR mode will be available across platforms.
How will this game transform the horror style of the FNAF series? Will the "Mimic" become the new nightmare for players? All will be revealed in June. Are you ready?
