ITTF [2024]: VR Table Tennis World Title Event Announced

VIVE POST-WAVE Team • Dec. 16, 2023

1-minute read

The International Table Tennis Federation just made a major announcement: the first ever VR Table Tennis World Title Event is scheduled to take place in 2024. ITTF President Petra Sörling expressed great support and anticipation for this event, believing it to be a significant step in the innovation of table tennis and an active exploration of olympic esport and virtual reality technology.

A glimpse of these virtual sports events already made a showing at the inaugural Olympic Esport Week held in Singapore back in June this year. The term "esports" being used here is not quite what we typically imagine-- in the olympics it has a more general scope, also encompassing virtual or digital versions of traditional sports. At the exhibition, various sports such as archery, baseball, chess, cycling, racing, sailing, taekwondo, and table tennis were showcased. It is worth noting that even with the use of new VR technology in esports, these athletes still undergo intense physical training.

From the exhibition match, players wear VR headsets and engage in highly realistic matches on the virtual table tennis program "Eleven Table Tennis," developed by For Fun Labs. This technology not only provides these next-generation athletes with new training methods but also offers all viewers with a brand new viewing experience. We will surely continue to see physical in-person table tennis competitions. But in the future, it may be possible for teams across the globe to play against each other in these virtual competitive matches remotely from different locations.
