"Grandma, it's me, Alex! I'm in big trouble right now—send me $5,000 to help me!" Such scam calls, whether in tone or technique, always seem absurdly comical. Although we are all familiar with the old tricks of scam syndicates, every time we receive such calls, hanging up seems to be the only option. Now, a special 'grandma' has stepped forward. She not only answers these scam calls but also uses her superb 'small talk' skills to hold the scammers, even making them break down and hang up first—she is AI Grandma—Daisy, a pioneer in scam exposure.
This AI Grandma developed by the British company O2 is not your ordinary chatbot. Her mission is simple: to waste the scammers' time with genuine and trivial small talk, preventing them from harassing others. After all, for scam syndicates, time is money.
AI Grandma is not as simple as you might think. She can analyze the scammers' intentions with precise voice recognition technology and use various fictional stories, even pretending to provide bank account numbers, successfully delaying the other party. Daisy was born from real anti-scam experiences, and her training data comes from a wealth of actual cases provided by professional scam-exposing YouTuber Jim Browning, making her well-versed in scammers' tactics and even able to flexibly counter different scripts.
Interestingly, her language model also incorporates a large amount of family-style dialogue data, making her responses sound more like a real grandma, full of life. She might even 'accidentally' reveal false personal information, making the scammer think grandma has taken the bait, when in fact, they are caught in an endless stalling battle. Data shows that grandma can chat with scam syndicates for up to 40 minutes.
Using AI Grandma's intelligence and time to counter scam syndicates is indeed a method that sounds both satisfying and fun. Hopefully, AI Grandma like Daisy can be widely adopted in the near future.
