This week at SXSW in Austin, a man who walked on the moon told us how we need to get to Mars, using virtual reality to show us the way.
Buzz Aldrin, Gemini 12 and Apollo 11 astronaut has a new goal – rallying the world to get mankind to Mars. As the second man to ever walk on the moon, he has a unique perspective to share. Aldrin teamed up with TIME, LIFE VR and developers 8i (website), to create Buzz Aldrin: Cycling Pathways to Mars, which is available now on Viveport.
While the title of Aldrin’s VR experience might make you think of urban green spaces and bike lanes, it’s actually a reference to an audacious plan to get us to Mars. Aldrin’s vision calls for permanent moon bases, utilizing the frozen water that is relatively abundant on the lunar surface to create breathable air, water and fuel for the new inhabitants.
In addition, a ‘Earth-Mars cycler’ would be launched, constantly traveling in a repeating loop between Earth and Mars, and available for other vehicles to essentially ‘hitch a ride’ on to make the journey to Mars more cost efficient and easier to repeat. In theory, the cycler would ultimately serve as a highway to Mars, allowing us to build permanent habitats on Mars, opening the door to even further explorations of the solar system.
It’s an ambitious and exciting plan, but ‘HoloBuzz’ is here to explain it all to you. In a 10-minute guided tour of the Moon and Mars, Buzz outlines just how we can make his vision a reality. With the help of virtual reality, you’ll be able to see beyond our planet and perhaps, into humanity’s future.
