Hatsune Miku Performs on LED Screen, Not Hologram, Stirring Mixed Feelings Among Fans

Who hasn't heard of Hatsune Miku? This virtual singer OG, born from VOCALOID, has transcended the realm of digital music creation to become a massive pop culture and internet phenomenon. Her annual holographic concert, MIKU EXPO, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year with Miku Expo 2024 and is currently touring across North America. However, recent performances have sparked outrage among her fans, as she appeared on LED screens rather than through holographic projection.

@kawhiney I love hatsune miku but for nearly $200 i didn’t expect to see a tiny screen :( #miku #hatsunemiku #mikuexpo #vancouver #concert #vocaloid #mikuexpo2024 ♬ original sound - Page ε(*´・ω・)з

The Miku Expo 2024 North American Tour recently kicked off in Vancouver, Canada. To the surprise of fans, the virtual singer Hatsune Miku did not appear in her usual holographic form, instead performing on what fans described as a "flat-screen TV" on stage, making the experience quite literally two-dimensional.

The fans' displeasure has spread to Twitter and TikTok. Many are dissatisfied with the "group TV-watching" style of the show this time, and there's also growing concern that future Hatsune Miku tour dates might follow the same production design. However, some more level-headed fans speculate that the absence of holographic projection in these shows could be due to Crypton Future Media's preparations for a more complex setup at the upcoming Coachella in April, where Hatsune Miku is also set to perform.

Next, Hatsune Miku is set to continue her tour in cities like Portland and San Jose, with tickets for many of these shows already sold out. Are you open to the idea of a non-holographic Hatsune Miku, or will you, like some of the "honest" fans, complain but still excitedly wave your light sticks to the rhythm of the music?
