When most people hear about virtual reality for the first time, they instantly think about gaming. However, virtual reality also has the ability to impact our lives in uniquely positive and emotive ways. One such instance is the basis of the live theater play of “Ugly Lies the Bone” by Lindsey Ferrentino. Through an emotional story about how virtual reality can help alleviate the pain and effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, the audience uncovers the harsh reality that military veterans go through upon returning home.
Arriving back in Florida after her third tour in Afghanistan, disfigured from severe burns, the main character, Jess, finds hope in the highly immersive “SnowWorld” VR experience to distract herself from her agony and move forward with her life. Once patrons of the show exit the theater, they have the ability to experience “COOL!” by DeepStream VR, which is the actual software being used in hospitals such as Boston Children’s Hospital to help treat patients. The ability to put on VIVE and experience the healing power of virtual reality, after watching the emotionally charged play, creates an entirely new style of immersive, collaborative and multimedia experience. As a response to the powerful story told in “Ugly Lies the Bone,” HTC, NVIDIA and AVADirect have donated hardware to be distributed to a selection of hospitals for virtual reality therapy as represented in the play, thanks to efforts made by DeepStream VR.
“Ugly Lies the Bone” is on stage at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia from September 16 to October 9th. While this is a first-of-its-kind experience blending live storytelling with immersive VR content, we certainly hope it opens the door to similar endeavors in the future. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this play when it comes to a theatre near you.
