5 minutes read

At HTC VIVE, we’re excited to announce that the VIVE Ultimate Tracker is now officially compatible with 3rd party PCVR headsets that support SteamVR, bringing enhanced tracking capability to even more users. Originally designed for VIVE Focus 3 and VIVE XR Elite, VIVE Ultimate Tracker is expanding its horizons, allowing gamers and developers alike to take their VR experiences to the next level—no matter the headset they choose.

What is the VIVE Ultimate Tracker?

The VIVE Ultimate Tracker is a state-of-the-art VR accessory designed to enable object and full-body tracking, ensuring greater immersion and interactivity in your virtual worlds. Whether it’s used for gaming, dancing, motion capture, sports training and rehabilitation, professional training, or simulations, the Ultimate Tracker opens up endless possibilities by accurately tracking your body movements and external objects in your environment.

VIVE Ultimate Tracker has two cameras onboard, and essentially tracks its own position without the need for  any external tracking devices or base stations. That’s why we sometimes call it the “self-tracking tracker.”

Expanding Compatibility: Thanks to Our Beta Users

Earlier this year, we launched a beta program to test compatibility with other SteamVR-supported headsets, gathering valuable feedback from the community. This feedback has been essential in improving both the UX and performance of the Ultimate Tracker when used with third-party devices such as the Meta Quest series. Our beta testers helped us fine-tune tracking precision, overall connectivity, and ease of use, ensuring a seamless experience for all. Thank you to everyone who joined the beta program!

So how does it work? With the official release, the VIVE Ultimate Tracker can now be used with SteamVR-compatible headsets like Meta Quest 3. This opens up new possibilities for Quest users, who can now experience object tracking and body tracking in Steam.

To help you get started, we’ve prepared a comprehensive User Guide to walk you through the process of setting up the Ultimate Tracker with 3rd party PCVR headsets. The guide provides step-by-step instructions on how to configure your VIVE Ultimate Tracker for third-party headsets, ensuring smooth integration and performance. You can find this resource, along with other support materials, on our VIVE Ultimate Tracker support pages.
