OpenAI's Project Sunshine: Enhancing ChatGPT with Memory for Personalized Conversations

VIVE POST-WAVE Team • Jan. 8, 2024

2-minute read

Do you ever find yourself repeatedly making the same requests when using ChatGPT, small requests such as reminding it to reply in Traditional Chinese, which can sometimes be quite time-consuming? Imagine if ChatGPT could remember your past conversations, understand your preferences and needs, then not only would it save a lot of time, but the interaction would also feel more 'in tune' with your expectations. How would such an upgrade (giving ChatGPT memory) change the way you interact with AI?

OpenAI is turning this idea into reality. They are rolling out an important upgrade for ChatGPT called 'Project Sunshine'. The focus of this OpenAI initiative is to endow ChatGPT with a memory function, aimed at aligning it more closely with your communication style and providing a more personalized conversational experience.

The new features were first exposed by netizens

This news was initially discovered and shared by a netizen named Jush in mid-November. He noticed this update option in the ChatGPT menu. Additionally, Tibor Blaho, a developer at AIPRMT, found clues related to Project Sunshine in the source code of the ChatGPT website, further confirming its existence.

Project Sunshine mainly introduces three new features, including:

  1. More consistent conversations: ChatGPT will remember your past conversations, making responses more relevant and precise.
  2. Progress over time: ChatGPT will learn and remember your preferences and details, making it more helpful in future interactions.
  3. Customizable memory: You can customize what ChatGPT remembers by sending messages, such as 'always write code in Python' or 'forget everything about my last project'. Of course, you can also turn off the memory function in 'Settings'.

In addition, OpenAI may also introduce a 'Temporary Chat' feature, which means that no information will be saved during the conversation. This will be very useful for teams sharing accounts. Such updates not only make ChatGPT more flexible but are also expected to attract more users to subscribe to the service. As for when this new feature will be launched, there is currently no clear news.

According to Tibor Blaho, OpenAI is also updating the GPT store, adding a search function and a platform to showcase the best custom GPTs. The GPT store, originally planned to launch last November, has been delayed until 2024 due to recent internal shake-ups at OpenAI.

If this plan really goes through, ChatGPT will no longer be just a tool for answering questions but will be able to remember every word you type and your needs and preferences, coupled with its powerful analytical and semantic understanding capabilities. Perhaps one day, ChatGPT might understand you even better than you understand yourself?
